Straightforward
cure for ‘gay’ dogs

“He’s become a bit gay, I
think, doctor’, Mr.
Brickland was telling me

about Sooner”, his cight- |

year-old Boxer dog.

“Yes”, he continued,
“when we take him out for a
walk, other dogs try and get

friendly and he’s got one

admirer who sits outside the
front gate most of the day -
and he’s only. half as big”.

I looked down at “Sooner”
— a good specimen of the

breed who had always been |

pleased to come into the
hospital — now wagging his
short tail and seeming to
laugh asihe kept his mouth
almost permanently agape.

‘As I knelt down to
examine him, he raised: a
forepaw to shake hands.
Some dogs are a real please
to see. Poor old Sooner
certainly had become a bit
‘mixed up’. He was losing
hair on both sides in the
flanks and his nipples were
quite large, all of which
pointed to a not uncommon
condition — particularly in
the boxer feminization.

Yes, here was the
probable cause — one
testicle was much larger than
the other. My diagnosis was
sertoli cell tumor. Not a
highly malignant type but it
has the characteristic of
secreting a female-like
hormone and this was
causing the symptoms which
were bother “Sooner” and
his owner.

These tumors can start in
a, normally placed testicle
and are even more common
in a testicle that is retained
with the abdomen. For this
reason I advise that any
abnormally placed testicle
be removed when it is ob-
vious that it is not going to
end up in the scrotum and
well before we have any
abnormal effects produced
by it.

“Well Mr. Brickland”, I
explained, “Sooner surely is
a bit mixed up but I think if
we remove this abnormal
testicle he will revert to his
old self with the excepiion
that his nipples may stay
enlarged. We will give him
some male hormone
hypodermically every weck
to hasten a return to nor-
mal.”

QUESTION:
Why do vets charge so
much?

ANSWER:

So much as lawyers or
doctors or dentists? Why
shouldn't they? A
professional man gives up
five or six years at university
during whic time he has no
income, only outgoing. His
early years in employment
give him less income than a
bus driver, longshoreman or
meat cutter. When he goes
into business for himself the
expenses in wages, utilities,
licenses, supplies, drugs and
mortgages are almost
crippling. To give him an
income commensurate with
his training and ability, fees
must be high.

QUESTION:

Im a gardener and will
soon be sowing out rows of
vegetable seeds. How can I
stop cats scratching in the
newly dug beds?

ANSWER:

Put a six foot high wire
fence around the patch.
Alternatively lay 2x4’s down

ANSWER:

Yes... if they eat it. It
causes acute poisoning with
frothing of the mouth and
~“olent convulsions and must
be treated by a veterinarian
who will control the con-
vulsions by giving a suitable
anaesthetic and counteract
the acute hypocalcaemia by
giving calcium in-
travenously. Packages of
