Like all additions, however, they must be carefully planned. By doing your homework before beginning construction, you should be able to build an attractive, practical solarium that may even contribute additional heat to your house. There are three basic types of solariums: the greenhouse, the passive solar collector and the energy-efficient solarium. While each type has distinct functions and benefits, only the third is designed to serve as a temperature-controlled living space 12 months of the year. An energy-efficient solarium is basically a well-insulated room with several windows facing south. This will allow energy from the sun to warm the room economically, and on sunny days may even pro- vide a little extra heat to the rest of the home. One of your most important ear- ly decisions will be whether to in- tegrate or isolate the solarium from the rest of the home. With an integrated solarium, no walls separate the sunspace from the rest of the house. This ar- rangement can provide a pleasant, year-round living space but re- quires very careful design: too much glass will cause overheating during the day and greater heat loss at night. An isolated solarium, on the other hand, can. be sealed off from the main house by closing adjoin- ing windows, doors and vents. This provides the homeuwner with greater control over the room’s temperature: you can heat the room only when you want to use it, close it off when the weather is cold and cloudy, or use it as a heat collector on sunny days. If you are willing to let the temperature fluctuate in this way, an isolated solarium may slightly reduce your heating bills.
