The North Shore Inline Hockey Association (NSHHL) and North Shore Indoor Bowls Association (NSIBA) are among those seeking to move into vacant North Shore Recreation Commission facili- ties. But the ree commission is currently unable to meet the clubs’ ‘specialized flooring tequirements. “AJ} our venues are multi-purpose,” said Tom Walker, community services coordinator, for the North - Vancouver Recreation Commission. “We're not say- there’s no chance of being ible to provide for that activity but at the moment we can’t accommodate them.” . In April 1999, public curl- ing moved ftom the Lonsdale rink to the North Shore Winter Club. Flicka - Gymnastics Club took over the rink space, leaving their old home, Memorial Gym, free. Meanwhile the bowlers — most of whom are part of lawn bowling clubs during the sum- mer — wanted to lay down a permanent carpet on Memorial Gym's hardwood floor. “In the winter, outdoors, it’s inclement weather,” said NSIBA spokesman Pete Moffatt, “and many people can’t bow! well. With the heav- iness of wet turf, you have to heave to get the ball to roll. People are able to continue to bow! indoors even if they hive arthritis.” The 162 members of the NSIBA have been trying since August to secure a space. Their season is already under way, but there’s aowhere on tae Norsh. Shore te play. The group did try using a portable carpet at Memorial gym — but it proved to be ill-fitting. A report produced by rec commission staff indicates that hardwood flooring is standard for_ most indoor recreational activities..
