a EEP COVE resident Joan J. Fowler didn’t expect the fetter which arrived in her mailbox. By Deana Lancaster Contributing Writer The letter told her that she'd won the 1995 Judy Dennis Award for devoted public service in support of culture on the North Shore. “f was astounded,” said Fowler. She didn’t know she had been nominated for the award. The recognition comes just as Fowler finishes her three-year term as president of the board of directors of the Seymour Art Gallery. It’s a volunteer position for a cause that Fowler has devot- ed much of her time to since she joined the board in 1985. “T think the gallery makes _ people aware of what’s eround and what's happening _ in the art field. Art shouldn’t be intimi- dating, it should be for everybody.” Under. her leader- _Ship, the gallery has grown and expanded its exhi- bition schedules and educa- tional programs for the com- “munity. It has also provided , 10 — Friday, March 8, 1996 — North Shore News a forum for many local artists to showcase their work. Her involvement with the gallery didn’t stem from her own talent, said Fowler. “I'm a irustrated water- color painter. I just muddle around a bit.” She said she got involved because she wanted to do something for the communi- ty that she moved to 12 years ago. Now that her term as pres- ident is over, she plans to spend more time painting and volunteering for other organizations, such as the Mount Seymour United Church and Meals’ on Wheels. Her work at the art gallery isn’t over either. Fowler said she plans to continue volun- teering there, although it will no longer be with the board. “It's time for a change after three years. You need new thinking and new approaches.” JOAN FOWLER wes cho- gen to receive the 1995 Judy Dennis Award for her support of the arts. From page 8 ed in the program are encouraged to register.
