Gun permit b A B.C. Supreme Court judge has shot a North Vancouver man’s appeal to. obtain a firearms. acquisitions certificate (FAC) down to provincial court. By Anna Marie D'Angelo News Regorter ~ Rory Jordan, 45, had [5 guns and bugs of ammunition taken away from him after a standoff with the North Vancouver RCMP on Sept. 4, 1993. The standoff followed a call to police by Jordan’s wife, Linda, say- ing that her husband had a gun and vas threatening to kill himself in their home in the 1200-block of Dogwood Crescent in the Norgate area. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Lloyd ~ Paul Williamson upheld in July a North: Vancouver’ provincial court decision to return the guns. The Crown had .zppealed Judge . Jerome: . Paradis’ dismissal of a ‘Crown's move to have Jordan banned — from possessing firearms, ammuni- tion or explosives. : ’ Paradis’. dismissal allowed the weapons’ return despite a psychiatric - Opinion that Jordan was unfit to own : or use firearms and despite Crown ‘-and police protests... ” Paradis. concluded’ that Jordan’s mental problems had never led to any “misuse: of firearms except for the ; “, September’ 1993 incident. -, Jordan's » arsenal of . weapons, including six handguns, cight rifles and one shotgun, were retumed by the North Vancouver RCMP shortly after Williamson's July decision. A set of brass knuckles, weapons prohibited in Canada, were not retumed, ; The atest court twist involved Jordan's FAC and an application by Jordan for two permits to carry restricted weapons. Jordan stated that he needed to carry restricted weapons “for protec- tion from predatory wildlife while prospecting” and to allow him to transport the weapons to target prac- tice. Williamson again dealt with Jordan's weapons issue in B.C. Supreme court. In a decision made on Nov. 7, Williamson noted ‘that Jordan, with- out a lawyer. had requested the B.C. Supreme Court judge to exercise jurisdiction over the weapons’ per- mits. “Tj have concluded that it would be inappropriate to ‘do so." wrote Williamson in his decision. _ Jordan's FAC was refused based on the contention that he had lied in the application in May.
