MANY READERS have nos-
talgic thoughts of riding across
Canada. or even just across the
Rockies, in so-called “stream-
liners.”

In the mid-"S0s, railway passen-
ger travel was changing from post-
war heavyweight cars to sleek stain-
less steel coaches with scenic domes
and large picture windows.

The railways felt they could keep
Jtarge numbers of people travelling by
train for long distances, despile better
highways and improving airline ser-
vices, OF course they were wrong,
but for many the pleasant memories
linger on.

If you can afford: it, remodeled
versions of the original “Canadian”
still leave three times a week from
Vancouver's Pacific Central Station
for the East; a comfortable, and still
classy way, to travel, but the numbers
travelling are few, except for the
summer tourist season.

For those who want to relive the
“transcontinental” memories close to
home on a very enjoyable day trip,
the West Coast Railway Association
has lined up a special outing incorpo-
rating mid-50's streamliner? passen-
ger train travel in unrivaled scenic
settings along with a chance to savor
vintage Washington state wines.

Used many times before on the
WCRA’s tour schedule is this “Spirit
of Washington” luncheon train
excursion.

An 8 a.m. departure on Saturday,
April 8 from Pacific Central Station
(near Main Street SkyTrain) by high-
way motor coach to Renton,
Washington, arrives in time to board
the “luncheon” train, for a noon-hour
departure to a winery in the
Woodinville area.

A gourmet lunch, with four choic-
es of entrées, is served at the reserved
table in the dining car, as the train
skirts Lake Washington's scenic east-
ern shoreline.

Following the main course, a tour
and tasting at the winery is included,
before a retum, over dessert and cof-
fee, to Renton at 3:30 p.m. There will
also be two hours free to sightsee in
downtown Seattle before.a return to
Vancouver.

Fares including the gourmet
lunch, GST and all. transfers, are
$124 for adults and $114 for seniors.
