Perhaps in a future article, he will examine the cause of these problems, which is the underlying racism in our immigration policy. Ask any Brit, or anyone else from Europe, and you will most likely hear at least one, perhaps several accounts of a relative or close friend having an application for immigration to this country summarily denied by our immigration department. We deny entry to Europeans, whose cultural backgrounds and language skills would allow them to assimilate rapidly and con- tribute to society without help from the already overburdened taxpayer. Yet we admit hun- dreds of thousands of others, many of whose cultural char- acteristics are so different from mainstream Canadian life that they are unable or unwilling to integrate. ‘There ate’ many conse- quences of this insanity. One is.a further burdening of edu- cational and social services that are already stretched to the limit. Another is social fragmentation. "Canada is fast becoming a country, not of two solitudes, but of 200, Where’s the sense in this? © Joseph W. Hind North Vancouver ability,” led into Coun, Ernie Crist's letter, supporting the restrictions of aw m traffic in our district as a resale al any rebuilding of the Lions Gate Bridge, included among others: “nore traffic will destray the livability of neigh- borhogds” and “lt will bring more noise, more concrete and more pallu- tion,” Thea, on June 27, Crist conveniently forgets his words, ignores district staffs recommendation for i socio-cconomie study on the Montroyal- Lonsdale extension and pushes through a motion, with the assistance of the new councillors, for the extension to be included in the 1995 capital bud- get How about that for opening up the neighborhoods to more traffic? A previous study in 1984 indicated that traffic on Montroyal, Upper Lonsdale and Braemar would increase by more than 25% over its entire length while existing streets, already enjoying traffic well within normal suburban levels would see slightly less traffic. According to district staff's June 8, 1994, report, “there is unlikely to be much change in overall population totals in the northern area in the foreseeable future ... Redevelopment of the northern single family areas is most improbable for the remainder of the life of housing in these areas, i.e. 30 to 50 years.” So, why then proceed in such a hasty manner, particularly when council in 1988 determined that the matter did not need revisiting for another 10 years? Our concern remains one of unnecessary cost and the preservation of our neighborhood, Crist’s concern remains one of wearing whatever suit fits from day to day without regard to the elfects on the entire North Shore population. Bob Molesworth North Vancouver Lightkeepers should go Dear Editor: rafters do the*r thing? Why is automating lighthouses a We have a lot of coastline and step backwards? Lighthouses and their keepers are as obsolete as the hand lead (measure depth), boatswain’s call (pass orders) and the log line (measure speed) which have gone the way of the steamship. Modern ships require neither lighthouses nor keepers for safe navigation in darkness and poor visibility. If keepers are required as _ lifeguards in areas around light- houses then why do we not have them stationed along rivers and guard” an infinitesimal percentage of these shores. I have no stake in this argument bul as a taxpayer must ask that lighthouse keepers and their sup- porters get into the 20th century and recognize — painfully for some, I must admit — that 18th century technology is simply unac- ceptable today.
