Preparation is key to handling car emergencies

THE BEST way to handle any
emergency is to plan in advance.

Roadside emergencies are no
exception, Unfortunately, many
people are caught unprepared when
they experience car trouble.

For example, have you ever
been stranded with a Mat tire and
not known how to change it? Or
had a dead battery, but no jumper
cables?

Another common example of
being unprepared will also sound
familiar to most motorists.

While almost everyone has a
flashlight at home to use during
power failures or while making
repairs, many people have not con-
sidered the importance of keeping a
scliuble flashlight in the car for
nighttime automotive emergencies.

A flashlight is a hefpful tool
when changing a tire or checking
under the hood after dark. And a
flashlight can be used to protect
your safety in two key ways.

Thermostat and cap

A thermostat increases engine
warm-up by closing off flow to the
radiator until coolant reaches a cer-
tain temperature — usually 195°F.

A stuck-open thermostat can
cause a cold engine and generate
little heat, while one stuck closed
can cause overheating.

Replacing the thermostat along
with the coolant is cheap insurance.

Pressure caps increase the
coolant’s boiling point by pressur-
izing it. Check the cap’s inner and
outer gaskets for grooves and

_ cracks that can let pressure escape.

Also, be sure to check a parts
catalogue before buying a new cap.
Too little pressure can cause over-
heating; too much can rupture radi-
ator joints and cylinder-head gas-
kets.

Coolant

Besides widening water's boil-
ing and freezing points. ethylene
glycol keeps cooling system corro-
sion to a minimum. As the glycol-
and-water solution ages, however,
its corrosion inhibitors start (o set-
tle out and form restrictive deposits
inside coolant passages.

Coolant also becomes acidic as
it ages and can eat away at vital
parts. Annual coolant changes are

the best way to keep deposits and.

acids from forming.

Some experts also suggest that
you flush the system, especially if
the coolant husn’t been changed in
over a year.

You can often-check for
deposits by removing the radiator
cap, siphoning out some coolant
and examining the passages inside.

Look for flaky buildup around
the tubes. If you find any, choose a
flush that's safe for aluminum
parts. If the deposits are white. use
a flush designed to remove deposits
caused by solder degradation.

Once the system has been
flushed and drained, pour in the
ethylene glycol first.

Fill with ethylene glycol to
between 50% and 70% of the sys
tems capacity. Then top tc off with
distilled water.
