8 - Friday, October 11, 1991 ~ North Shore News MAILBOX Socreds ‘inept’ at handling finances Dear Editor: We really have to laugh at the Socred party’s attempt to portray itself as the party with business acumen and the NDP as the party of fiscal innocents. Surely nobody has forgotten that it was the Socreds who gave away our precious Expo lands, in a deal fully supported by ‘Rita Johnston. It was the Socreds who had that scandalous, multi-million dollar overrun on the Coquihalla High- way, It’ s the Socreds who have run a budget deficit every year since 1980-81, and whese current budget actually werks out to $1.2 billion (a record for this pro- vince), when you get honest with the figures and omit their ‘‘budget stabilization fund,’’ which is nothing but a gimmick to mislead people about the true level of government spending. The Socreds also fike to boast Crisis Services srateful Dear Editor: The North Shore Crisis Services * Seciety would like to publicly thank the District of North Van- couver for providing a grant of $13,000, the District of West Vancouver for $10,000 and the City of North Vancouver for their grant of $6,000. We gratefully ac- knowledge this much-needed ongoing financial support. Emily Murphy House is the on- ly transition house on the North Shore and it has been operating for 12 years, not only providing women with a safe refuge, counselling and support, but also providing much-needed programs for their children. Last year 138 women and 171 children were given temporary shelter and assistance, and 688 women received outreach counsell- ing. Attempts were made, with some success, to find help and shelter for an additional 461 women and children who were in need of our help when we had no room for them at Emily Murphy House. The work that we do is vital. The need for our services grows and we are very thankful that the three North Shore municipalities recognize this and support us. Carol Ward-Hall N.S. It’s the flight of Hong Kong capital to B.C. and the steady influx into B.C. of people needing new housing that’s kept B.C. afloat during the recession. Even so, we still have unemploy- ment above 8%; is this the Socred version of economic prosperity? The truth is that, besides being dishonest and immorai, these people are so inept at handling money that we can’t afford to have their fingers in the till for another five years. When Mike Harcourt was mayor of Yancouver he proved that he can manage a large budget very well indeed. We need good sound business heads like his run- ning our province for a change. Olive Johnson Bowen Island Varley son knowledgeable Dear Editor: { was very pleased to see that the Varley Commemorative Society is working so diligently in Lynn Valley (Sept. 15). However, in the photograph, Mr. Izzard is holding the “Varley”? book; but 1 failed to find any mention of the author, Peter Varley, son of Fred Varley! There is no one with more knowledge of this Group of Seven painter than his son, who lives in Nandimo. I hope this was an oversight and that the Society is aware of this valuable source of otherwise unobtainable information.
