10 - Wednesday, July 18, 1990 - North Shore News Wiest Van teachers retire TWO WEST Vancouver District 45 teachers were honored recently for their contributions to local education. By OLGA RUSKIN Contributing Writer Don Chitty of Chartwell! Elementary School and Ruth Hawkes of West Bay Elementary both retired in June after teaching in West Vancouver for 35 years. Over the past 26 years, Chitty has been a_ vice-principal of Hollyburn, Caulfeild and, more recently, at Chartwell, where a “Chitty Day’? was held in his honor. Chitty was presented with a book containing over 100 con- tributions from past and present students and their families. The book included ‘‘Chitty’’ stories and poems and photographs. A Donald Chitty Citizenship Award Trophy, which will be presented to a Grade 6 student, was also set up as a retirement remembrance. Hawkes, a Grade 3 teacher at West Bay, was treated to a sur- prise retirement celebration that was attended by former students going back to 1955. ‘‘People just kept coming and coming,’’ she said. Reflecting on the strides made in the local education system dur- ing his tenure, Chitty said that today’s teachers are better prepared technically, but that teaching itself is more difficult. “A lot of the teacher’s time is spent trying to keep up with the speed of change,”’ he said. Schools, he said, are run much better now, and ‘trustees and the superintendent are much mors: knowledgeable.”’ Chitty added that he has always had sympathy for children in trouble ‘‘because I was one of them.” He recalled being strapped 54 times, and even thrown out of Grade 1. Hawkes, a Grade 3 teacher throughout her teaching career, staried teaching in West Van- couver in 1955 at Irwin Park Elementary, which at the time was a four-room school. Chitty worked for 10 years in shipping, logging and with an oil company before becoming a teacher. **He’ll be missed for his wit and humor. He’s grandpa to the kids,’ said Chartwell principal’ Sylvia Rayer. Hawkes plans to continue teaching at her Richmond church, and helping out at a downtown mission during her retirement. Chitty plans to work in con- struction for another two years until he is 65. “I can’t sit at home and do nothing,’’ he said.
