Women get career heip NEW PUBLICATION AIDS WITH JOB DECISIONS 1 LIKE the Work; } Like the Money is the subtitle of Jabstories, a new book for women making career decisions. The book contains stories of 57 women in growth occupations where the average annual income equals or exceeds the British Columbia average. **Since most women don’t make the average British Columbia wage, this is a book abou future possibilities for women who are making training deci- sions now," said Donna Stewart. Stewart, a North Shore resident, is executive direc- tor of the Learning Resources Society, a non-profit agency which does research and education on women’s work. She also did most of the interviews in the book. “We kept getting phone calls from women who said, ‘I want more training, but [ don’t know what to train for!’ They couldn’t consider many of the oc- cupations in our book because they didn’t know about them. “Fortunately. the Economic Services Branch of Canada Empioyment and the Women’s Secretariat of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Job Training VALLEY had collaborated on a book called Job Futures British Columbia, They had done all the statistical work on occupational incomes and employment projections. “We picked well-paid occupations that were ex- pected to produce at least five hundred new jobs by 1995, found women in those occupations and inter- viewed them. Eight of the women we interviewed live on the North Shore, and all but one of those works on the North Shore. “It was a very enlightening process. Did you know that welders are artistic people? That operating heavy equipment is a mental as well as physical job? That most women appreciate variety and challenge in their jobs? That prospective hairdressers can be happy at plumbing? There are all sorts of surprises in the in- terviews."* The Women's Secretariat (B.C.), che Vancouver Foundation, Canada Employment, and Secretary of State heiped to fund ihe book. The book will be popular with librarians and counselfors in schools, colleges, women's organiza- tions and employment programs, but already mothers are asking for the book for their daughters.
