MAILBOX Library open on Sundays supported Dear Editor: , I was pleased to read your Dec. 30 editorial calling for an extension of the public library service available to North Shore residents on Sundays. However, perhaps I may be permitted a minor correction: the West Vancouver Memorial Library offers service on Sundays from mid-October until the end of April : (rather than the end of March). We commenced this service in the fall of 1984, that is prior to the municipal referendum which paved the way for Sunday shopping in West Vancouver. The library board was responding. to a perceived demand at that time and would like to do so again, cither by extending the hours of opening each Sunday (e.g. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) or by providing library ser- vice on Sundays throughout the year, or both; unfortunately budget constraints prevent this «: present. As for closing one day a week to provide financing for Sunday openings, we tried this appraoch and found that our users were op- posed to it and never got used to the fact that the library was now closed when they thought it should be open. It should also be noted that, as one of the busiest libraries (on a per capita basis) in North Amcrica, the memorial library docsn't have a quiet time that would justify mid-week closure. We support the goal of exten- ding hours on Sunday and will continue seeking to achieve it when the financial resources are available. The demand for library service in West Vancouver is so heavy that the memorial library must be expanded. R.G. Wyckham, Chairman, West Vancouver Memorial Library Board. Reader disgusted at ‘trashy column’ Dear Editor: ‘Good for Arnie Towes, whose Istter in the North Shore News of . Nov. 27 I enjoyed reading. I had already addressed an envelope to your paper and was going to voice a strong complaint about you including that horren- dously trashy column of Dr. Ruth in our otherwise splendid com- munity newspaper. We are disgusted and dismayed that you include her column in your paper. . Get rid of her! She belongs in trashy magazines or whatever but not, please, never ever again in the North Shore News. I now scan the paper the minute it arrives, and tear out her column and burn it, before even :my hus- band or my grandchildren see it or ‘Chivalry is Dear Editor: |. * May I use your column to ex- press my thanks and appreciation for a good deed well done. (On Tuesday, Oct. 13, I had the ~ | misfortune to ‘have a mechanical failure in my. car on the Upper Levels Highway near the Westview : intersection. Needless to say I was very distraught at being the cause of a traffic obstruction during a period of heavy traffic flow. While I was waiting for the return of. my, passenger who had gone to seek help, I was alone and have a chance to read her rubbish. Surely you don’t need the likes of Dr. Ruth to gain subscriptions. This is not censorship. Let peo- ple buy the appropriate magazines if that’s what they want to read. And if they need advice in that area fet them go to a sex therapist or doctor or counsellor. What do you want? A cheap tabloid? Hf so, cancel my subscrip- tion. I don’t want that woman in my house. | heartily agree with Arnie Toews and laud him for his courage to voice his opinion. I am sure 99 per cent of your subscribers agree, but are too lazy to write and complain. I mean it, Ruth stays, 1 quit your paper. Marguerite Gilderstceve West Vancouver — not dead feeling very vulnerable when three capable young men stopped to of- fer assistance. The nature of the mechanical problem was beyond fixing under the circumstances. However they remained with me until help arriv- ed and continued to assist by pushing the vehicle off the high- way. I did not get their names but they should know how much their presence reassured me. Chivalry is notdead. J. Joyce Webber - North Vancouver Benefit Dinner a in honour of oo _ MAE (FUNG) ...
