P&T ‘hideous’ Dear Editor: What makes the Park and Tilford proposal so hideous is the fact that it flies directly in the face of the community plans for both the City and District of North Vancouver. As you know, these plans are long-term declarations of intent and a statement of philosophy where you lay out and declare your long-term intentions for land use. On that basis, citizens have built their futures and invested their money. That’s especially true for many of the small business people who believed that municipal politi- cians could be trusted and that the plans would be adhered to. There was never any question that the film studio was a welcome development, but the commercial aspect will create havoc for the rest of the North Shore. It is the worst possible place in terms of traffic and will require millions of dollars to change everything around. The developers, of course, have stated that the shopping centre must be part of the development or they will pull out. But I personally think that is a lot of horse dung to exert pressure. Although this development, technically speaking, is in the city, it is right on the borders of the district and will have a major im- pact for district residents. Since, under the Municipal Act, the city had to inform us officially about the change of the original community plan, our council took the opportunity to let them know, in no uncertain terms, what we thought of it, which they promptly ignored. So therefore, I made a motion that we inform city council that we have not budgeted any money for additional road improvements made necessary as a result of this unplanned development. Unfortu- nately, I didn’t get sufficient sup- port because some of the more timid souls on district council thought it might worsen the rela- tionship we have with the city. But I think otherwise. I think that our relations would improve dramatically and their hearing ability would take a quantum leap if they would know that we will not spend our taxpayers’ money for their folly.
