36 - Wednesday, April 8, 1987 - North Shore News EXERCISE AT HOME New mothers get in shape IF YOU’RE a mother-to-be or a new mother and you prefer to ex- ercise at home, Fitness Dynamics will come to you. A pre-natal and post-natal outreach program has been orga- nized by the fitness organization. Instructor Joanne Kates said the outreach program will enable mothers or mothers-to-be to have their own personal exercise pro- gram set up in the comfort of their own home. She said some women prefer to exercise alone: some feel uncom- fortable in a group setting, are un- able to coordinate their work schedules or cannot get babysit- ting. She said the advantages of a specialized program are it can change from month to month as needs change; it can deal with specific physical problems, such as back pain; and it can be paced to suit the woman’s lifestyle. For ex ample if she prefers to swim, an aquatic section can be incor- porated in the program. “For most people the years of pregnancy and parenting are quite overwhelming. Especially for first- time parents,”’ said Kates. “This kind of support system throughout one’s pregnancy and for the initial post partum stages is vital. There is no reason why anyone should feel anything but great — with the exception of the nausia — throughout their nine months of pregnancy.”’ She added the postpartum period is when many women commonly suffer from depression. She said exercise can be a tremen- dous benefit. The cost for the program is $22. Call 929-1953. The regular pre- and post-natal group programs are still continuing at Highlands United Church and at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. % 3 photo Nell Lucente EIGHT-YEAR-OLD Travis Pollitt (right) and 10-year-old Jeffrey Russell plant a seedling on the empty field adjacent to the North Van- couver District Premier Street Dump site.
