LOCAL TASK FORCE Committee aims to create jobs CREATING STRATEGIES to improve the job market on the North Shore is the mandate of four task forces being set up by the North Shore Economic Development Advisory Committee. The task forces will deal in the areas of tourism, marine-related enterprises, industry in genera! and commercial enterprises. The task forces should be set up within the next three weeks, and will make their first report to the advisory committee in December. The committee, formed last Ju- ly, is made up of representatives of Capilano College, the three municipalities and the North Van- couver Chamber of Commerce. The profile was completed by five summer students working on a federal government Challenge °86 job creation program, with aid from North Vancouver District municipal staff. Smith said some of the strengths the North Shore has to offer in the area of economic development in- clude its proximity to transpora- tion routes, its low reasonable tax levels, its large pool of profes- sional talent, and its ideal residen- tial area. He said weaknesses include a lack of land for light industries, potential problems with the trans- portation of dangerous goods on the North Shore, land-use conflicts between residential and industrial areas and an attitude that the North Shore is primarily a “bedroom eommunity.’* Last Thursday was the third meeting of the advisory committee. Earlier they heard from economic Strategy consultants, who gave a workshop on ‘how to do economic strategies.’ The outcome of that meeting was planning to form the task forces. The house they currently rent has only two bedrooms, but in their new home there are three bedrooms and room to expand. Chief Richard George, of the Burrard Indian Band, said the ad- dition of the new houses is a first start to eliminating the band’s on- reserve housing problem. He said approximately 60 of the band’s 180 members live off- reserve, and the majority would welcome the chance to return pro- vided housing was available. “Housing has been quite a pro- blem with us. Before we were get- ting funding for one house per year from the federal gov- ernment,’’ said George. “The families (who are benefit. ting from the new housing proicct) are feeling very happy.
