improvemen CONSERVATION Wasted energy means money out the window WHETHER IT'S hot or frosty outside, wasted energy means wasted money. Here are some pointers on sav- ing energy during the cool weather months. * Keep drapes and shades open in sunny windows; close them at night. © An automatic garage door op- erator encourages one to shut the door quickly, thereby saving fuel — even in unheated garages — by preventing cold from reaching the inside walls. * Electric heat tapes on water pipes that run through unheated areas will prevent heat loss from cooling or freezing. © Change furnace filters regular- ly. A dirty filter impedes air flow and makes your furnace work longer and harder. Check them at feast once a month. © Be sure to keep the damper closed on your fireplace when not in use. Consider the installation of a glass door fireplace that will keep heat from escaping up the chimney. © Use portable electric heaters for seldom-used rooms or to warm up part of a large, cold room. Year round energy savers: * Use fluorescent lights where possible. A 25 watt fluorescent will provide light equal to a 100 watt incandescent. e Replace leaky faucets; repair all water-wasting fixtures. A dripp- ing hot water faucet makes a hot water heater keep working. * Utilize working shutters, inte- rior or exterior, to control heat gain or loss. © Close off unused rooms. Kitchen, laundry and bath: ¢ Insulate hot water storage tank and piping. Kits are available. * Clean heat reflector below the hot water heating element. It will reflect heat better. ® Install a flow-restrictor pipe to shower-head. This easy-to-install device cun save a considerable amount of hot water. It's inexpen- sive, fits into the pipe to the showerhead and restricts the flow to an adequate four gallons of water per minute. e Have hot-water using ap- pliances -— clothes and dish washers — full, but not overload- ed; same for clothes dryers (use drying racks or clothes lines if possible). ©Use warm or ccld_ water (rather than hot) whenever possi- ble. t- 15 - Friday, Octaber 3, 1986 - North Shore News ansarotigyy meewonenmnrstsh oe es and extra” We’re celebrating National Furniture Sale Week with some great local bargains.
