18 — Wednesday, September 3, 1986 - North Shore News Sports WORST IN Committee looks at eye injuries THE EYE Safety Committee of the Canadian Opthalmological Society (COS), tabled its report on eye injuries in sports in Canada recently. Although the report shows a decrease in the overall number of eye injuries in sports from 345 in 1984-85 to 297 in 1985-86, bad- minton has surfaced as the leading cause of eye injuries in racquet sports. The statistics on eye injuries for the 10 month period under review — July ’85 to April ’86 — were released at the Society’s 49th an- nual meeting in Vancouver, B.C. The Eye Safety Committee's stastics are based on reports from COS members. Of the 78 racquet sports eye in- juries reported during the period, 28, or 35 per cent, were caused when playing badminton. Badminton vye injuries are usually caused when the eye is struck with the bird, which can travel at speeds of up to 217 km/ hr. Quebec, where the sport is most popular, reported the highest number of badminton eye injuries. The COS Eye Safety Committee has worked with the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), in the development of a CSA-cer- tified safety goggle for squash and racquet ball. The goggles are expected to be available by September of this year. **As far as hockey is concerned, the major problem continues to ex- ist with older players,’’ says Dr. Tom Pashby, chairman of the COS Eye Safety Committee. “Many who don’t play in leagues are still reluctant to wear CSA-approved face protectors.”” While the total number of eye injuries from hockey has decreas-. ed, the average age of an injured player continues to rise. In 1974-75 the average age of an injured player was 14 years, while this year it is 27. Reported eye injuries from hockey in the past 10 months total 121, with 22 of these injuries caus- ing blindness.
