IF IT had been any other justice minister, anybody except
John Crosbie, the proposed anti-freedom laws passing
themselves off as an anti-porn crusade would be ludicrous.

With Crosbie at the heim, the
situation becomes surrealistic.

i had a debate on a TV show
with Crosbie back in Ottawa one
wintry night a few years ago. It
was about the seal hunt,

Being a -Newfoundland politi-
cian, he was all in favor of killing

foundlanders.

Glib and evasive, a blustering
Newfoundland politician with an
empty soul and a screaming ego —

that’s how I would characterize.

John Crosbie, Canada’s Minister
of Justice.

This is the man who, in the
name of attacking pornography,
has proposed to bring back the
primitive censorship of the 1950s
— and beyond, ‘back to the Dark
Ages.

Most of the things the Crosbie
Show would ban — the slishy stuff
— is actually quite natural, you
know, That is, it is biologically ac-
curate stuff.

And even if it wasn't, what
blocdy business is it of his ~ or
his legions of nosey, Peeping Tom
bureaucrats? ANYTHING that
gives more arbitrary power to fed-
eral sneaks is bad.

As the recent debacle about cen-
sus forms reveals, privacy is a dead
duck in this country for the indi-
vidual, as it is. To now take away
the right to watch anything Jess
than precisely what you or | FEEL
like watching, is regressive,
repressive and far more repulsive

‘than the material it seeks so clum-

sily to eradicate.

It is, in fact, dangerous.

Which brings me to this: John
Crosbie is dangerous. He is dan-
gerous because his alleged anti-
porn legislation is a massive assault
on fundamental freedoms.

Attack porn at its roots. Don’t
come after my few precious re-
maining freedoms. Stop child
abuse by ai! means, but stay away
from my privacy, what little there
is left.

Of course we ail know that
Crosbie is as slippery as a freshly-
skinned seal. The day he took a
bow before the zealots and the
fundamentalists, he made sure his
department released. a survey
showing most Canadians would
rather see MORE sex, not less.

So the legislative proposals are
