Sports Train cautiously in cold weather ATHLETES should take ex- tra precautions training in cold winter weather. During the winter most athletes retreat indoors for their conditioning or recre- ational exercise. There will always be some athletes, however, who prefer to do their running or other conditioning activities outside. This group can include wrestlers, cross-country and track athletes and football players (in off-season condi- tioning programs). Trainers and coaches should remind them that extended exposure to the cold and wind, without proper protection, can be dangerous. A combination of low en- vironmental temperatures and gusting winds can lead to hypothermia, a potential- ly fatal condition. Hypothermia is defined as a body-core temperature significantly below 98.6°F (37°C) due to the reduction of general metabolism inthe body's tissues. Factors that may contribute to this loss of valuable body heat in- clude hunger, fatigue, exer- tion, amount and condition of clothing, injury, and pro- longec exposure to the ele- ments. Any athlete who par- ticipates in outdoor recre- ation should guard against excessive heat loss and recognize the following progressive signs of hypothermia. (!)
