THE GREATER Vancouver Regional District has
urged the provincial government to provide leader-
ship to deal with the manufacture, storage and
transport of dangerous goods in British Columbia.

A report prepared by a
GVRD committee says cur-
rent legislation is not suffi-
ciently comprehensive to ade-
quately control the complexi-
ty of substances that are
dangerous to persons or the
environment.

The 29-page report deals
with émergency planning and
communication as well as
dangerous goods.

**In the past, silence on the
part of industry and neglect
on the part of government
best describe prevailing at-
titudes,’’ says the report,
**but crises here and else-
where have given rise to
general call for better
knowledge, regulations,
plans and facilities for

The committee was chaired
by Delta Mayor Ernie
Burnett. The other members
were West Vancouver Mayor
Derrrick Humphreys, Rich-
mond Mayor Gil Blair and
Vancouver Ald. Bruce
Yorke.

The Committee’s recom-
mendations included: __.

that it draft a policy ‘‘for the
manufacture, storage and
transport of dangerous goods
in B.C. in consultation with

The committee found that
practically all GVRD
municipalities have ap-
pointed emergency co-
ordinators and have com-
pleted or are in the process
of completing ‘‘Emergency
Response Plans.”’

But there is still no
legislative requirement for
each municipality to have an
Emergency Response Plan.
