City wants pool plan info NORTH VAN- -: COUVER City council .. wants a detailed written ~ report on the proposed ©” re-opening of Mahon ~ | Get expert advice } Pool before it will make a decision. That’s what aldermen told Terry Grimwood 10 days ago as he took the latest steps in trying to renovate and reopen the 105 by 40 foot pool that is currently closed. He asked the City to lease the pool to the non-profit society he plans to form to carry out renovations and operation of the pool. As well as the written report, North Vancouver Ci- ty Engineer Alan Phillips has asked if he could provide Grimwood with a list of ques- tions to answer to help aldermen obtain necessary information. The idea of forming a non- profit society was a new one to Council and City staff who had been looking at the pro- posal as a private commercial venture. Grimwood plans to . renovate the pool in gradual phases, utilizing volunteer labor and donation of materials to a great extent. Renovations would entail ° the filling in of the deep end - to create a uniformly. four foot deep pool, regrading o the concrete deck and even- ~* tually a fenced in 25-foot’™ lawn to the east. The existing «2 bath house would be replaced ~: and two outdoor racquetball” courts added. This would ©: cost upwards of half a million dollars, Grimwood said. “‘The concept isn’t flashy enough to attract the ‘new wave’ of recreation people, but three or four years ago Mahon Pool served a minimum of 500 people per day. | know there is a strong demand for an _ outdoor swimming pool,”’ he said. Mahon Pool ts a $1 million City asset that has been unus- ed for the past few years, Grimwood argued. “*L believe that a group of | concerned citizens could get that facility working again,"’ he said. Grimwood) proposed to charge 60 cents for children’s tickets and $1.20 for adult tickets Fle expected co- operation from McDonald’s, School District 44 and=the Canadian Red Cross in seli- ing tickets and operating the pool It would not be necessary to butld a parking lot, park ing had never been a problem when the pool operated in the past Neither would health regulations be oa problem, Cornnwood said Gaimwood asked fora five veat tease with ao pay back clause so that his society would be reambursed for im provements to the poobin the event that the Cary decided Hot tO cenew the lease. oa ttause Phillips called oa ability to the Caty Corton wood also said that his socic ty would pay taxes on the ftacthty although he hoped that thos would not be necessary L. fg Ge LLLEL AlS - Wednesday, February 22, 1984 - North Shore News - ae ey # on Autoplan _ There’s a North Shore independent | ] > @ neighbourhood.
