EB mailbox DX FACED WITH CLOSING Silver Harbour needs a ‘miracle’ Dear Editor: A very sincere ‘‘Thank- You”’ for the excellent and timely lead editorial of Sept.. llth regarding the possible closing of Silver Harbour Centre as of March 3st, 1984. As you know, this Centre has provided invaluable ser- vices of all kinds to some 2,500 seniors annually, with excellent spin-off effects to their families and the com- munity at large, thus saving the Provincial Government Ambulance Dear Editor: Re: ‘‘West Vancouver Fire Department Rolls When Heart Attack Strikes’’ pg. 16, Wed. Aug. 31, 1983 editon North Shore News. West Vancouver citizens with a medical emergency should phone the Ambulance number (872-5151) immediately. Their call will be answered by personnel qualified to evaluate their medical situa- tion and to dispatch help. The dispatcher knows where the ambulance is located at all times and works closely with the Fire Department and police. He can immediately dispatch the closest and most enormous sums of money during the past ten years. | have been a member of Silver Harbour for the past eight years and President for the past two, and observed first hand the fantastic results its work has achieved with seniors. All this has been ex- plained to the Minister - Grace McCarthy - with a re- quest that she take a second look at her decision to ter- minate our $114,000 propor- tionate funding as of March 31st, 1984. Yesterday a letter from Mrs. McCarthy ignored best bet appropriate personnel, be they ambulance or fire department, or both, to the emergency victim and, if necessary, alert the hospital. All segments of the system give immediate and life- saving service. Efforts of the Emergency Health Services Commission to coordinate medical help should not be undermined by a suggestion that the Fire Department should be first to evaluate a medical emergency. Im- mediately dispatching a fire- fighting truck to a= scene which may have been more efficiently reached by an am- bulance does not make medical or economic sense. D.E. What a tragedy it will be if one of the very few wholly successful examples of ‘‘people helping people’’ MLAs’ pay increase Dear Editor: 1 would lke to reply to Sheila Kent’s statement in your Sept. 4 edition. She states the MLA’s have receiv- ed a 48% pay increase since 1980. 1 am always interested in reading constructive criticism of the Provincial Govern- ment. However, | am tired or reading misinformation and innuendo. The facts are: Salary of MLA’s in 1980 — $33,516.00 Salary of MLA’s in 1983 — $40,047.00 The increase was actually 19.49%, and there is 0% in- crease for 1983.
