(Terry Peters photo) Howard’s team takes third DESPITE STARTING last and crashing mid-way, Team Hammer managed a close third place finish recently thanks to the efforts of North Vancouver's Rhys Howard. Rain plagued the four- hour motorcycle endurance race at Atlanta, Georgia July 11. Team Hammer's late entry to the race resulted in the 60th position sfart. The crash was caused by a lapped rider who fell off directly in front of Howard in a 80 mph turn, just as the local racer was gaining 10 seconds a lap on the leaders. Howard pulied the team's 1170 cc Suzuki out of a mud bog surrounding the corner, restarted and headed into the pits for repairs. The crash cost the Chevron-sponsored team more than four minutes, but when he returned to the race Howard again gained rapidly on the leaders. Howard shared riding duties with William Knott of Illinois, a last minute replacement for Team Hammer co-founder John Ulrich who re-injured a Wood Windows BARGAINS! Tokeland A’s lead JUST FIVE games remain for most teams in the North Shore Slowpitch league, and it looks like the Tokeland A’s have got the season wrapped up. The Tokes have just one loss in nine starts while the Newcomers appear to be saving themselves for the playoffs with a 0-9 record. Iron Horse currently appears to be one of the stronger teams, with a recent 11-8 win over St. Alice. Recent success could be due to fine leadership from coach John Payne but more likely the name change from “The Slugs” has something to do with it.
