a B10-Sunday News, October 5, 1980 PARIS (UPI) -_ Rolls- Royce unveiled its first new four-door automobile in 15 Wednesday — the $118,464 U.S. Silver Spirit complete with onboard computer that estimates arrival time and door locks designed after those on the pharoahs’ tombs. Prospective buyers were able to imspect the Silver Spirit when the 67th Paris Motor Show opened recently. They found very special computer Is Ss: New Rolls Royce sells for.over $1 doors. When the owner turns the key half-way, only one door locks. When the key is turned all the way, all the doors lock. Rolls-Royce officials said the odds against a car thief successfully picking one of these multi-pinned jocks, patterned after those devised by the ancient Egyptians in 2,000 B.C. to guard the pharoahs’ tombs, were 24,000-to-1. The locks are not the only new thing about the Silver Spirit. Drivers used to say that at 60 mph, the loudest noise in a Rolls-Royce was the ticking of the clock. In the Silver Spirit, the clock ticks no longer. It has been replaced by a digital computer which also gives the journey time and estimated time efarrival. The leather upholstery is from specially bred cattle which have been kept away from barbed wire to ensure their hides are unmarked. The tree will then be set aside so that if the car later needs to be repaired, an owner can be guaranteed a perfect match. For penny pinchers and conservationists, there is a catch. This year’s Silver Spirit, with a top speed of 120 mph, gets only !2 miles per gallon in town. Check could save a dollar an hour Are you buying more gas than you need? You very well may be, according to Car Care Council, which says Many motorists may be wasting gas at the rate of as much as a dollar an hour because they are neglecting their cars. According to a recent consumer survey, says the Council, the majority of cars in both self-serve and full- service stations are not being checked as often as they should be. Some parts which are critical to fuel economy, such as spark plugs and air filters, are in substandard condition. One out of three filters checked in a recent survey was found to be dirty. And the council estimates that a car needing a tune-up, spark Head rest The head rest ts an im- portant safety feature found in most vehicles today. “Whip lash” is familiar to most people. Medically this is called a flexion-extension injury because that is the movement of the head when hit from behind. This violent, uncontrolled movement in both directions can do a lot of damage to the structures in the neck and cause a great deal of pain and discomfort for a long ume. A head rest wall prevent the initial over-extension ot the head in the event of a rear end collision and with out this movement there ts no resultant forward snap BUT THE HEAD RESI MUST FIT THE PERSON IN THE SEAT It must be high enough and nough to prevent ment. For the owner of a big car using premium fuel at highway speeds, this adds up to a dollar’s worth of gas an hour going out the tail pipe. Checking and replacing the air filter is one of the easiest things a motorist can do on his or her car, ac- cording to the Council. It sits conveniently on top of the engine, usually secured in its housing with a single wing nut. Most air filters are made of a pleated paper which traps the air-borne abrasive matenals out of the air before they can enter the e carburettor. The filter should be checked every six months. Although most car makers recommend replacement at 24,000 to 30,000 or more often under dusty con- ditions, many owners change the air filter as an annual maintenance habit to ensure maximum fuel economy. must be adjusted properly above the neck. The head rest should be well padded and strong enough to take any strain which may be placed on it. It is an unfortunate fact that many people put the head rest down as far as it will go to allow passengers in the back a better view This can be a very high price to pay should an accident occur So, adjust the head rests in) your vehicle. and continue to use the seat belts.) for maximum = pro techon and safety KEEP YOUR DISTANCE The closer you follow the geeater the chance of an accident Why tisk trouble’ You have preater control and oare safer and = more relaxed af you refuse to pel R J.
