AFTER SEVEN seasons in the CFL, Don Mat-
thews’ record of being in the Grey Cup game every

year is still intact.
Appointed Head Coach of
the Lions in January 1983,
after six seasons as an assis-
tant coach in Edmonton, he
led the Lions to their first
Grey Cup berth since the
1964 season, as well as the
Western Division

Washington, then back to
Idaho as the Offensive Co-
ordinator in 1970.

Moving later to Portland,
he led Sunset High to two
consecutive State titles before
leaving to join the staff in
Edmonton in 1977.

As the Esks’ defensive co-
ordinator he assembled one
of the most feared units in
the league, an influence not
lost on the Lions defense
which led most categories in
Stats in 1983.

This year he will be looking
to return to Edmonton, but
only to play in the Grey Cup
