New sign cost recovery 0

A revamped cost-recovery program
for B.C.’s blue and white service
signs and “attractions ahead” signs
has taken effect.

“The new program is the cerut of consulta-
tion with industry,” says Transportation and
Highways Minister Lois Boone.
“Improvements have been made to the fee
structure to lessen the impact on business own-
ers who have lower volumes of tr. ,

Service and attraction signs advise motorists

of services available, such as food and lodging.
Two wpes or signs are used: generic symbol
signs and business name panels which specitical-
ly identify business names or use busins'ss logos.

The revamped program will see owners pay
an annual fee of $100 to S115 per sign based on
whether their signs are located en a remote or a
busier highway. This fee covers the program's
administrative and maintenance costs.

Sign owners will also pay the actual fabrica-
tion and installation costs for cach new blue and
white sign they require. Government will con-

supports that hold the signs. Business owners
with more than one access route to their facilt-
ty will also have the option of installing signs on
each route ata cost,

The cost recovery program was announced
May 1, but the collection of fees was deterred to
allow an industry isory group to provide

Added B.C. Chamber of Commerce presi-

consultative process presenting issues and con-
cerns on behalf of our members.”
