Tit From page 16 We began with a soft taupe, moved next to a subtle green and decided on a sim- ple white. The room changed colours faster than my hus- band’s face every time he had to write a cheque. The chaltenge of this room was the eastern facing windows which brought in a minimal amount of natural light. We found the white walls gave an amazing amount of light and bright- Ness to an otherwise dark entrance. With that completed it was on to the window trims. We decided on a very subtle thin black tim on the three win- dows. There’s no question that the black trim contrasted with the white walls and it tied in beautifully with the black wrought-iron railing. We found the best way to pick colour combinations is to window shop at stores and on the Web as well as browsing through magazines. Sometimes it’s easier to visu- alize how colours work together when they are demonstrated right in front of you. The next step was the staircase and railing. The under sides ‘of the stairs were painted white and the top of the steps were left natural. We cleaned up the steps and applied a thin coat of clear Varethane to brighten them up. Varnishing stairs when you have chifdren is an exercise in unintended conse- quences, We have the Robinson Crusoe effect of children’s footprints on our slate, a weekend worth of dirt per- fectly sealed to their feet and the loss of my husband’s vocal cords. The wood handrail was left natural and varnished. The black wrought iron was cleaned up of any dirt and residue. The charm of this front hall lies in the detail of the staircase. We were quite pleased with the results. Now the ‘stairs are celebrated, as they should be. In order to maintain a sense of drama to the room we chose to replace the linoleum tiles with black slate. This textured floor invites you to walk in and really gives a nice strong quality feel to the room. Slate is versatile and quite economical for small spaces. We We combined i ir with a neu- “sisal equivalent” carpet wailed Cordovan and the two complemented each other beautifully. Separated by white french doors, the Cordovan spills into the living room and pulls the front hall and living room together as one. A 32-inch runner was made to cascade down the stairs. We really liked the look of the wide contrasting binding we have seen in magazines but we were shocked to dis- cover how expensive the rocess was. Initially we were oping for a 4” black bind- me later discovered that once you deviate from the standard X” to X” binding it becomes expensive. Any wider binding requires hand es create drama sewing, So you can imagine the labour cost involved. What we decided to do was to use the stock ane- quarter-inch binding and have the runner bound in black. This saved us close to half the cost. Not bad for a look that’s almost identical. Be sure to ask about this next time vou desire custom binding. The removal of the door into the kitchen and hallway opened up the frent hall space in addition to allowing in more light. We closed of F the hallway berween the hall and master bedroom to have a built-in closet. This allowed for more storage space for shoes and coats. An important detail that was missing from the front hail was now in place. A new front door was added and painted black, and a black wrought-iron lamp now hangs over the entrance- way. The hardware selection for doors is amazing. Styles range from Craftsman to antique and modern, depend- ing on you choice of door style. Be sure to check out . your smatler, local door sup- pliers as they quite often have some great d A brushed nickel hardware set was chosen and it sets off the black door nicely. In the end, the front hall trans- formed from a 1912, light absorbing, dark- wood appear- ance to a reflective white sea- side feel. The stark whiteness of the hall is softened by the natural light and contrasting slate and carpet. Despite all his raised eyebrows, I think my hus- band actually likes the results.
