14 - Wednesday, September 21, 1988 - North Shore News Rowers make Olympic showing WEST VANCOUVER rower Kirsten Barnes and her partner re- corded Canada’s best showing in Olympic rowing action in Seoul, South Korea, on Sunday. In medal round qualifying for the women’s pairs, Barnes and Sarah Ogilvie of Vancouver came in a respectable third place in their heat. After a close battle for first place in the heat, winner Romania went on to medal competition; Bulgaria was second, but failed to make the medal round. Track athietes win events NORWESTERS TRACK & Field Club athletes Luke Meyer and Lori Durward are now busy with fall training after a summer that saw them compete across Canatla as members of the B.C. Juvenile Track & Field Team. In the Western Canadian Juvenile Championships in Edmonton, Meyer, 16, won the decathlon as well 2s being a member of the winning 100-metre B.C. relay team. Durward, 15, won the 800 metres, was third in the 1,500 metres, and helped the B.C. 100-metre relay team to its win. At the Canadian Juvenile Championships in Quebec City, both returned home as Canadian Juvenile Champions. Competing in that event, Meyer won the long jump, while Dur- ward wou the 800 metres and placed third in the 1,500 metres. Again the 100-metre relay team took first place. Members of the club set the pace for the Terry Fox Run across the North Shore Sunday. Coho Run grows in popularity MARY NICELL, Teresa Rind and Carolyn Daubeny, all of Van- couver, were the top women’s finishers in the Coho Run from Ambleside to Vanier Park last week. Finishing at 58:39, Nicell was followed just more than a minute later by Rind at 59:40 and Daubeny coming up in a neck-and-neck third place at 59:41. Jessicns McAlpine worn the women’s undez-20 spot in the I4- kilometre race. In men’s action, Vancouver's Larry Nightingale at 42:21 took top spot in the run, with Vancouver's Calvin Robertson and White Rock’s Bent Nielsen finishing close together for second and third at 49:26 and 50:30, respectively. North Vancouver’s Rob Waller topped the ranks in the men’s under-20 category. “We had people from the United States, Toronto, Powell River and the Interior,”’ said organizer Milt Williams. ‘‘The race is becoming more popular each year — people come back because they just love the route.’’ Of 528 runners in the race, 499 finished the course, which went from Ambleside Park across the Lions Gate Bridge and through Stanley Park to Vanier Park. Flat tire slows race driver down A FLAT tire deflated victory hopes for North Shore native Andy Mahood, who had to settle for a fifth spot in Player’s/GM Motorsport Series Westwood action recently. At the start, Mahood moved casily into second place. Feeling the pace well within his capabilities, he sat poised to make a bid for the lead when the time was right. But behind Mahocd and the leaders, a cloud of dust and a spray of broken car parts erupted across the track as jostling and impa- tience produced a multiple car pile-up. On the next lap, Mahood’s black Camaro picked up some debris in the left front tire, meaning fading speed as the tire deflated. Series leader Frank Allers finished first ahead of Murray Craig in second; Tony Morris, once as far back as 10th due to the earlier mishap, finished third. Maheod brought home his Camaro in fifth place, putting him up one notch in the overall standings to sixth spot. Going into the final race in Calgary this weekend, the smallest of margins sepa- rates him from fourth spot overall. Kicks off fer club COACHES SOCCER League ac- tion kicked off over the weekend, with some close games and substantial wins. A brilliant header by Jules Ering in the Seymour Ravens and Crown Tire game deflated any hope by Crown Tire for a comeback. Other scorers in a hard-fought 3-2 Raven victory were Henry Vitimek and Danny Grant for the Ravens, with Tom Sporando put- ting in the two for Crown Tire. Complete results are: Lynowood Nordic 7 F.C.
