22 - Friday, October 2, 1998 ~— North Shore News Gallery auctions expect top dollar for hot work Layne Christensen News Reporter STUART Slind is one of a half dozen North Shore artists whose works will hit the auction block at the Vancouver Art Gallery’s big-ticket fundraiser Saturday, one of three high-profile art auctions taking place in the city this month. But the West Van artist won't be present at the gallery’s Art Auction "98 when the gavel falls. Slind lett this week for Oslo where he'll view a retrospective of Norwegian painter Odd Nerdrun. And that’s just fine with the artist. “IT think it would be very nerve-wracking to be there,” said Slind from his car phone on the way to the airport Tuesday. “Last year at Splash (Arts Umbreila’s annual fundraiser now in its 16th year) there were 10 of us (local artists) who got more than our listed price. That's tine, but you always worry...” Horseshoe Bay artist Ross Penhall can rest assured that his donation to Art Auction °98 will fetch no less than its estimat- ed value of $7,000. The artist is so super-hot right now that event co-chair Jack Adelaar expects to take an absentee bid from a buyer in Paris, France for at least that amount. Tickets for Sarurday’s dinner and live auction, to be held at the newly renovated Crowne Plaza Hotel Georgia, are $175. But there’s no charge to view the collection of 55 works or place NEWS photo Mike Wakefield STUART Slind has paintings included in two high-profile art auctions this month: the Vancouver Art Gallery's Art Auction '98 Saturday and the Arts Umbrella benefit Splash ‘98 on Oct. 17. a silent bid during the their preview at the Vancouver Art Gallery through 9 p.m, today.
