Council gives up arts cash By Susan Pohorski Contrituting Writer THE District of West Vancouver Council voted 4-2 Monday to contribute $3,410 to the North Shore Arts Commission to cover administrative costs for 1997, Council declined to sup- port Arts Alive magazine and television programs and said it would not provide funds for the arts commission in the furuze “Why do we have to pay $3,400 for someone to tell us how to spend $17,000,” asked Coun. Allan Williams. “This is the kind of burcau- cratic expense that drives peo- ple crazy..” Williams and Coun. Victor Durman opposed the fund- in Zz. According to the arts com- mission, $13,440 is devoted to the administration of the North Shore Arts Assistance Grant Program (NSAAGP). Using the traditional per capita contribution figures, West Vancouver’s share of the cost was fi at $3,410. The City of North Vancouver and North Vancouver District provide the rest of the fund- ing. Council voted to withdraw from participation in the arts commission in November last year. However, some reports lead. the commission to believe that West Vancouver would continue its participa- tion in the grant program. But said Coun. Liz Byrd, “West. Vancouver has with- drawn and wishes to move onwards in its arts involve- ment. The arts grants issue is an anomaly to be corrected in 1998.” Roger Nelson, acting sec- retary and treasurer of the arts commission urged counci] to reconsider. “I don’t think you understand the __ process involved, Our staff don’t work for nothing,” he said. “We pay for heat, rent and light like everyone else.” “e Sammon.
