had the good
fortune to visit South Africa,
one of the most beautiful
countries in the world and
has much to offer as a tourist
destination.

However, the unique and diverse
plants of the Cape region attracted
me. The world is divided into six
plant or floral kingdoms based on
climate, growing conditions and, in
particular, species. One of these six
kingdoms is found at the very tip of
South Africa in the Cape area.

What makes this area unique is
its small size and diversity of
species. It’s only 90,000 sq. km
(about one-tenth the size of B.C.). A
tiny speck of teritory compared to
the other five kingdoms. Botanists
have catalogued 8.500 species of
plants in the area. This represents
about 40% of all the plants found in
southern Africa and 68% of these
plants are found nowhere else in the
world.
