Gene Slobod NV man handed pot fine A 56-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man caught watering an estimated $250,000 worth of marijua- na plants was fined $3,000 in North Vancouver provin- cial court. Leslie Curry pleaded guilty to cultivating marijuana in con- nection with a Nov. 30, 1393 incident near Charles Street in North Vancouver. Curry owned the warehouse where the marijuana operation was flourishing. His lawyer, Richard Israels, said the renter of the warehouse owed Curry rent money. Amid snickers from specta- tors and the odd sigh from North Vancouver drug squad members sitting in the back of the courtroom, Israels talked about haw Curry had watered the plants, but was not really connected with the iHegal activ- ity. He also pointed out that Curry was an upstanding citi- zen as his common-law wife, also in the courtroom, could attest to. Israels said in court that the narcotics operation was a rela- tively unsophisticated affair. At that point, Crowa lawyer Jay Straith extended his arm and made a tilting motion with his hand, indicating to Judge Bill Rodgers that he did not totally agree with the statement. In making his decision on the case, Rodgers said that usu- ally anyone pleading guilty to this type of operation at this level of monetary worth would go to jail. “This is your lucky day,” said Rodgers, before he handed out the fine. Charges against Curry of possessing cocaine and possess- ing marijuana in connection with the incident were stayed (dropped) during Sept. 27 court proceedings.
