The Dry Dock Clothing Co. may have little to do with the literal definition of its name, but the store does bring to mind a sense of casual, laid-back style perfect for meandering along a dock. With these comfortable, durable clothes you could kick off your shoes and paddle your feet over the edge of the wharf or perhaps set sail. In keeping with the mood of the store’s location at the Lonsdale Quay, Dry Dock stocks leisurewear in easy, earthy West Coast styles. The store buyer chooses only separates that are “built” for spontaneous living — even if it means rolling the sleeves, folding the ankles or cinching up a skirt. Classic shapes, which may even be interpreted as civilized in some circles, are mixed and matched with little summer separates to make them decidedly flirtatious. Solid, undemanding neutral colors slide over subtle patterns-and prints that can be wrapped, layered, tied and buttoned, or left unbuttoned. The fabrics are influenced by both sea and shore in everything from awning stripes to Far Eastern geometrics in cotton jersey, canvas, cotton shirting, hand knits and rayon. In the spirit of the name, we took this shop's clothes to the North Shore dry dock Neptune Bulk Terminal, surrounded by ramshackle sheds, old warehouses, repair cranes and tug boats. Though the outfits chosen are classically styled, they get mischievous details like back buttons on a tank tunic, left undone, and a thigh-revealing slit on a sarong. Add your own relaxed details such as tying a knot at the front of a T-shirt or rolling trouser cuffs and pairing them with beach sandals. Keeping the look sophisticated, fabrics are carefully matched. Pale blue striped trousers and tank are teamed with a baseball cap. An ethnic-printed sarong goes with a vest that’s hand-knit in the same pattern over a T-shirt trimmed with embroidery to accent the vest.
