HOUSING STARTS in
June bounced back from
varhier predictions,
according to the
Canadian Mortgage and
Housing Corporation
(CMHC).

“Recent mortgage rate
hikes have not yet fully
impacted construction but
sales of new units, and hence
starts, will likely turn down
as a result,” said Helmut
Pastrick, senior adviser of
market analysis for CMHC
B.C.-Yukon Region.

“There is about a three to
six month lag between
changes in mortgage rates
and starts. June starts reflect-
ed carlier financial commit-
ments,” he added.

Nationally, housing starts
moved up to 166,600 units
SAAR in June from a revised
{58,400 units SAAR in May.
