‘LAST. WEEKEND I found
another one of my favorite
styles of home, this time in
‘the, 2900-biock Mathers
Avenue, -West Vancouver,
. Situated. ona large corner
lot. surrounded by a high
hedge. ;

‘It is a very good example.of a
.. Sueamline_ moderne-styled home.
_ Fortunately the North Shore has a
few well-preserved examples of

this style of architecture from the
°30s.

“of the Vancouver Symphony Or-
chestra will perform a program of
traditional Christmas music ac-
companied oy 60 members of the
North Shore Chorus.

Two- separate concerts are
scheduled: the first at noon and
the second at 1:30 p.m. Each
performance is approximately 45
minutes.

Highlights of the concerts in-
‘clude: ~Anderson’s The Skater
Waltz & Sleigh Ride; Holst’s
Christmas Day; and Leontovich’s
Carol of the Bells.

Song sheets will be handed out
to the audience for sing-along
. with the orchestra and choir.

This moderne style is geometric
in design with softened angles and
sweeping curved corners, hori-
zontal balustrades and flat roofs.

The main surface is covered
with smooth white stucco or con-
crete. The windows are square or
rectangular. and, in the case of this
home, follow. the curved surface
of the building.

Small glass panes or glass
blocks are ‘sometimes used for
both added interior lighting and
exterior design treatment.

When this style was introduced
in the late 1929s it was considered
both fashionable and futuristic,

It played upon the theme of
travel in that day, echoing in style
the romance of the 1930s and the
infatuation with air- and ocean-
going transportation.

Thus, the close resemblance to
the sleek ocean liners with the
railings, decks and canopies.
