the early 1900s. The rock that was
blasted out of the shore line was
barged over to reinforce the CPR
roadbed and to make ieities in the
‘Fraser River. Some of it ended up
- below what is now Sinclair Centre.
- There was a sort of small town
that grew up around the rock

available inthe 1930s, the bunk-
houses they’d used were converted

Roche Point, which’ now cradles
.Cates Park in its arms, was saved
from development by an insistent
£.P. Cummins. He was a Dollar-
ton resident, had a store’ there,
and also acted as a District Coun-
cillor. : ‘

He crusaded - constantly on
behalf of ihe lovely area, and
nageed uatil in. 1950, Mr. Sowden,
who was reeve then, - was -per-
suaded to designate the whole
twenty acres as parkland.

Hurrah for Mr. Cummins. ‘
