AS I mentioned fast col- umn, we headed south — as i write this, I'm sitting in ihe van, parked i in an RV park on North Temple Street in Sali Lake City. ‘We have walked till we nearly dropped — right from the top of . the hill where the capital rests, past Temple Square, through ; museums and shops. More about that later. "First, as planned, we : detoured to visit the small town of . Jacksonville, Oregon. I'd read a travei column in the Seattle PI, praising the town as an interesting historical destination. * Jacksonville is about five miles west of I-5, near Medford. It can also be reached hy taking the Gold Hill exit, about 10 miles north of ;Medford. ... ' From the article, we had high “hopes fora fascinating visit, i, Well, go visit if you’re going - past Medford anyway, but don’t ‘detour 100 miles out of your way ° cas we did, ‘ ” However; campers take note: the KOA RV. park in Goid Hill is excellent — shiny clean and new, with sandy sites. 7] If you stay there, the alternative ‘raute to Jacksonville goes through 7 about 15 miles of charming tural | Oregon. . “Jacksonville was a gold rush | ‘own, established shortly after gold was found i in nearby Daisy Creek, « "The town boomed and became . ‘the busiest commercial centre in at part’ of the state. : _Banks, retail stores, hotels and mansions were erected. ' : “About 80 structures remain, or so I’m told.:’ However, most of the gazs the © visitor sees are located in the cen- “tre of what was downtown, about ‘three blocks. - < These are still in use, mostly as - shops and galleries. : : . The former court house is a stately structure, just a block west of the main street — Calif ornia _ Street. - ae It has been iuried into a ; “museum, witha children’s museum located i in an adjoining : building... - * Again, if you happen to be in» the area, go visit. As small town - “ Thuseums go it’s middling. . ‘There is a wonderful display of ’ photographs, taken during the, ‘boom period by a fine : ’ photographer, Peter Britt. “-- Alas, no catalogue of the ' photos was available (they either Tan out or no one knew where they were filed)... . "It is very frustrating to look at a room full of marvellous old pic- tures without a single iabel or guidebook! We stopped for tea in the garden of the 1889’s McCully ‘House on California Street. It was Sunday and several larger _ groups were having brunch inside — it’s a nice old home and the food looked quite good. As for us, we may as well not have existed. * ~ We got our tea and muffins — no napkins, no knife for the but- ter and ... I’m sure you get the picture. I also peeked inside the dining room of the old Jacksonville Inn right in the centre of downtown. It was all white linen, wine coolers and plenty of white- -shirted waiters. Probably a better bet. The outstanding feature of Jacksonville is a remarkable man- sion — the Nunan House. Look for it just outside town, adjacent to the cemetery. Barbara MeGreadie TRAVELWISE What a beauty! It’s open daily for tours during the summer (mid-May to mid-Septembez} and on weekends during November and December. The house was built in 1 1892, ordered entirely from a catalogue. : It was shipped frotn Tennessee in 14 boxcars including every little fitting, even the carpeting and draperies. If you’re interested in Victorian homes, this one is Queen Anne style with all the intricate roof - angles, bays and gables. Since the Nunans left in 1912, the house has passed on to many owners. ‘One of the more recent owners rescued it and completely restored the home. I’m told they lived in the basement for several years while they did the job. The present owner has furnished it with period antiques: The origi- nal furnishings moved with the ‘ ‘Nunans to California. :. Also, i in the replica of the old’ ' carriage house on the grounds, the: present owners have quite a re- : markable Christmas shop. I'd also recommend a visit to the cemetery. It’s a lovely, peace- ful spot, iocated on a hillside. . You can drive in — it’s just off.” ‘the road from Gold Hill. ~ - : We did as several of the other- visitors did — picnicked on the grounds. Old cemeteries tell stories that you rarely read about in history books. You can piece together stories of entire families — young mothers buried with their infants, winter epidemics — it’s all there if you care to look. So we doubled back to the California coast, cut cast over the Donner Pass (Highway 80) to Reno and on to Salt Lake City. For once, I left Reno with slightly more money than I had to start. The weather has been great but ‘ there’s a heavy hint of winter in the air. | expect the fall will be as brief as the summer. It’s been several years since we sperit any time in Salt Lake City and we've enjoyed it thoroughly. It’s even worth the dismal drive over Highway 80 from Reno! I'd like to be like some travel writers and make that nine hours seem like a pleasure — all that ‘Riders of the Purple Sage”’ stuff. Sorry, it’s one of the bleakest Pieces of real estate on the conti- nent. As usual, we broke the trip in Winnemucca, three hours east of Reno. You didn’t expect us to get away early in the day, did you? Winnemucca has two very nice RV parks, side-by-side on Win- nemucca Boulevard: ; We stayed at the KOA last June and the Desert this time — both are Al, We've also stayed at the Red. Lion Hotel and it’s just exactly ~ what you would expect in a small: Nevada town — a highway stop with a small casino. “If you haven’t tried Basque food, the old Winnemucca Hotel is the’ ‘place to go. A huge fami- ly-style meal with wine will cost ‘you about $14 and it’s quite an : experience. More about Salt Lake City next ‘ column. -~ I do hope some of you will consider Utah as a destination .— it’s just a glorious state. “All Destinations v= TAC TO wer } AASHA cron ad | 299 (inc, Airfare, hotels and Transfers) Discover Your World Travel __1295 Marine Dr, N.Van. 980-4526 - Guaranteed lowest prices in Canada on all Cruise vacations.
