HELP’S AT HAND HELP’S AT Hand, by North Shore Community Services (NSCS), is a forum for discussing government policies and pro- grams, benefits, consumer and legal rights, taxation and public services. Answers are intended only as a general guide and should not be applied to individual cases without consultation. Last week we answered a question from a woman who was wonder- ing what she could do to support and understand her friend who is living with a cruel and aggressive man. We talked about the personal and societal reasons why a woman might not be able or ready to leave an abusive relationship. In this week’s column we will explain the services offered by transition houses. A transition house, also known as a safe house or shelter is a place where women can go to get away from a harmful,. abusive relationship. Transition houses are located in most larger and highly populated communities. The houses are un- marked and their location is not revealed to the public. Transition houses are open to women of any age, marital or fi- nancial status, sexual orientation, - or ethnic group. They can be with or without children, and can te fleeing any type of abuse in any relationship, One the North Shore, the Emily Murphy House (EMH), operated by the North Shore Crisis Services Society, runs a 24-hour crisis and information line. They also pro- vide drop-in and telephone counselling and women can attend a weekly support group. The maximum length of stay in EMH is 30 days. During this time most residents will have found another home, with the informa- tion and assistance of House staff if needed, The EMH has a limited number of beds and sc sometimes it will be full when a woman calls. If this is the case, the staff will be able to discuss other opticns, such as staying with a friend tem- porarily, or calling other transi- tion houses iss Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. In next week’s column we will continue this discussion by explor- ing some of the legal issues relating to abusive relationships. The Emily Murphy House can be reached by calling the 24-hour crisis line at 987-3374. General inquiries can be made through their office at 987-1773. The Victim’s Information Line - can provide referral to transition houses and other services around the province. The number is 1!- 800-842-8468 (no charge), and the hours are 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. This column is prepared with financial assistance from the Notary Foundation.
