Most members have been on the team for 10 years. _ “There is a good advantage (to being the youngest) in that there is nothing expected of you and any- thing I do is to my own benefit. There is not much pressure, but if I don’t do well, people just assume it’s inexperience,’’ said Burgers. A relaxed Burgers spoke to the News a few hours before he caught a plane to Amsterdam at the end of June for competition in his third major regatta. After that the team was going to France and then Barcelona for the ‘‘fourth major regatta’ this year. Before his pit stop at home, Burgers competed in Essen, Ger- many and San Diego in a singies scuiling event (he was chosen to go because he was the fastest singles on the team at the time and he placed ninth out of 40 boats). Recent men’s rowing team prac- tices have. taken piace in various locales, including Whistler and Victoria. . Burgers is one of three North Shore residents who will compete in Olympic rowing starting on Ju- ly 31. Kirsten Barnes and Jessic Monroe are part of the Canadian women’s powerhouse rowing team. The Canadian women are defending world champions and have been undefeated in every regatta they competed in this year. The Canadian women’s Olym- pic team is favored to win the gold and it is the first time ever that a non-Eastern European country has held this top ranking. “We (Canadian men) have a good chance of medaling too,” said Burgers, adding that Ger- many was the team to beat. He will be sweeping (one oar each person) on a four-man boat without coxswain at Barcelona. The Olympic team will also com- pete in an eight-man boat with coxswain and doubles skulling (two oars each person). The women’s team will compete in singles skulls as well with On- tario’s Silken Laumann (back from a recent freak injury), who is a medal favorite. Burgers, who is going into fourth year at UBC with plans -to become an architect, says his parents have been supportive of his athletic career, but they do want him to get on with school. “This year has been sanctioned (by my parents),’’ said Burgers, referring to the time he has had to take off school. He credits the national team coach, Mike Spracklea from Great Britain, for making the men’s team a good team in three years. N.
