New plaza piece lost in translation From page 25 As regards the gargantuan trumpet projecting from the plaza over the esplanade, it is difficult not to be positively predisposed to it. Althougn it is hardly the most finely crafted assemblage of found and fabricated forms, it does possess, both in its roughness and in its celebration of local legend, a certain naive charm. Uniortunately, it is difficult to be as generous with respect to the massive sculpture that dominates the plaza itself. Even as a mere maquette ten- tatively entitled “Woman with a Harp,” it bore too great a resemblance to the kind of sen- timental schlock one would expect to-discover in a cheap European tourist shop to be worthy of serious consideration as a work of art, Although the schmatlz was re- tained in its new title (North Shore Rhapsody), most of the sublime rapture that must have charmed the selection committee was lost in the transiation from working model to finished sculpture. What we are left with is a great hulking monstrosity whose agonized head, chest and shoulders are so grossly distorted that the impression conveyed is more that of a hunchback with a thyroid condition than a seductive enchantress. A work rawly crafted of steel . | YES! Please send me ___ | Cost: $9.95 x and concrete, ils suriace textures hint at macrame or papies-mache. Encrusted on the herp, perhaps in an effort to link the sudject to the North Shore, are a half-dozen in- set panels bearing images for the most part too obscure visually even to decipher, much less ascribe a historical significance to. On the whole, the piece has a medieval or Byzantine appearance that says more of the eastern European sensibility than it does of North American culture in the late 20th century. The rea! surprise is that no one. on the selection committee seems. to have been cognizant of any of this. : What went wrong here? Who, if. anyone, was reaily in control? What, in fact, were the qualifica- tions of those invested with the power to make decisions? Who were their advisors? Why did the utterances of Arts Commission's pet publications smack of lip-ser- vice and empty praise rather than honest evaluation? What we fave witnessed in this experiment is nothing less than the. “execution of art’ by bureau- cratic decree. The general con-. sensus among those of informed.”. opinion is that North Shore Rhap- sody is at best an esthetic embar ‘-fassment we would do well to’ learn from before we ry to ignore or forget it it. most wanted cats.in.”. the West is sure to be | on your MOST WANTED list too! 4 ¢ White mug * Detailed, full color illustration ° BIG 12 oz. capacity ° Easy-to-grip handle -.. ° Dishwashersafe characters to “leave. town: ORDER YOURS TODAY!
