In business since 1976, IPI has been known on the North Shore since 1983, when it started a local Blue Bag newspaper curbside pick-up that was the first of its kind in Canada. Currently, the company boasts a fleet of 20 trucks, four of which service the Blue Box program in Coquitlam and Langley. IPI also does the curbside collection of newspapers in Port Coquitlam and the processing of materials col- lected in White Rock and Burnaby by Laidlaw Waste Systems Ltd. IPI operates plants on Riverside Drive in North Vancouver, Sur- tey, and in Victoria, where they have collection and _ processing operations similar to those in the Lower Mainland. IPI employs 30 people on the North Shore. Much of IPI owner Emmie Leung’s job involves the constant monitoring of the ever-shifting markets for the recyclables her company collects. While the market dropped severely for newspapers two years ago, it is now ‘“‘comfortable.”’ The current problem, she says, is fin- ding a buyer for colored glass: pricing changes at Consumer Glass in Lavington, B.C., means it would now end up costing IPI to take their glass there. But Leung says the most critical issue facing (the recycling pro- gram) now is the high number of residents who put out their Blue Boxes for collection before they are full. Unnecessarily emptying boxes and sorting their contents at each driveway slows down a crew that’s under a strict deadline to finish its route. You can just put ont your Blue Bag on its own, says Leung, if it is full but your box isn’t. IPI now accepts cardboard at its Riverside Drive location, and is working on plans to recycle mixed paper.
