ADULT education tutors are needed for Project Second Start to assist adults with reading, writing, math or English skills under the direction of a teacher either in a classroom or individually in a home environment. Tutor must communicate well in English and be over 18 years old. Training is provided in a series of five workshops 7 to 9 p.m. Mon. and Wed. evenings. Actual hours are twice per week, flexible times. SENSITIVE creative teaching assistant is needed to work one to one with mentally/physically handicapped adults on a creative music class i.e. singing, dancing and percussion instruments. Vol- unteer will work beside individuals and assist teacher with ‘‘self ex- pression’’ music class. Training provided. Hours are Tues. even- ings 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. or 8 to 9 p.m. for eight weeks. SUPPORT group needs a per- son with interest/knowledge of Alzheimer Disease to attend and help lead support group meetings. There are-15 family members/ caregivers in group. Speakers will be arranged and volunteer will provide follow-up phone calls after meetings as needed. Training and orientation provided. Hours are last Tues. each month 7:30 to Youths learn leadership skills AT A time when society em- phasizes the limited opportunities that teenagers seem to have these days, the YMCA has decided to do something about the problem. Both North Shore Y’s will be offering a Leaders-in-Training program for 12 to 14 and for 15 to 17-year-olds starting Sept. 19 and for 18 to 23-year-olds starting Sept. 24. This unique program has consistently produced effective leaders who excel in their fields. Through games, activities, trips, volunteer hours, theoretical and practicai training, participants in this program learn how to under- stand themselves and others, de- velop skills in activities, formulate a set of values and appreciate those values held by others and by the organizations within which they serve. As youths approach adulthood, they seek responsible positions in which their activities are appreci- ated and the results of their ef- forts are significant in their own eyes and, more importantly, in the eyes of others. Volunteer should be empathetic with women in crisis situations and observe confidentiality. Interview is re- quired. If accepted, training is 10 weeks. 2% hours per week. Actual hours are four per weeks flexible. RUN a ‘thappy hour. Sociable, outgoing person who is a non or moderate drinker is wanted to organize and run a **Happy Hour’’ for five to 20 ac- tive, alert seniors.
