SPORTS Flames scorch Buckeroas WITH WEST Coast junior hockey playoffs only two weeks away, the Nosth Shore Winter Club Flames turned on the heat, burning the Buckeroos 11-3 on Feb. 2 in Port Coquitlam, and then turning back the Grandview Steelers on Feb. 4 at home. On Thursday at PoCo, a hat trick by Rob McLaughlin and two first period goals by John Cox and Sean Morrison on the same shift, only 23 seconds apart, set the pace for the Flames’ 11-3 blowout of the Buckeroos. Cox opened the scoring with the first goal at 4:42 from Jason Loewen, and then Morrison rapp- ing home a set up from Ken Sav- age at 5:05 for a 2-0 lead after one. Early in the second period, the Flames went up 3-0 on a shor:- handed goal by Kevin Buhr frota Savage, and then added four mor: markers — Mike Loftus scoring from Morrison; Savage scoring unassisted; McLaughlin from Buhr; and Gordon from Savage and Morrison, before PoCo got on the scoreboard for a 7-1 lead heading into the third period. After Morrison opened scoring in the third period with a short- handed goal, the Flames added three more tallies — McLaughlin from Gordon and Cox, Loewen from Cox, and then McLaughlin with his hat-trick goal assisted by Gordon and Wade Bartok. The Buckeroos scored twice late in the period for the 11-3 final. Flames’ goaltender Kevin Rad- bourne handled 35 shots while North Shore shooters blasted 48 at the opposition net. In the Flames’ hard-fought 7-5 win over the Steelers Saturday at home, the Flames went ahead [-0 sports exp just two minutes into the game on a goal by Morrison from Andrew Merilees and Buhr. Five minutes later a power-play goal by Bartok from Loewen and Gordon put the Flames up 2-0, but with a minute-and-a-half remain- ing in the period, the Steelers replied with a power-play goal of their own, leaving the Flames ahead 2-1 after one. Grandview took a 3-2 lead in the second period with two unanswered goals, the first one coming on the power play at the 2:21 mark and the second an even strength goal at 14:24, But with just over two minutes remaining in the period, Morrison on a neat give-and-go with Loftus and Bartok, notched the equalizer to close out the period with the teams deadlocked at three. The two teams traded power- play goals early in the final frame — Buhr combining with Gordon and Bartok at 5:16 and the Stcelers replying at the 7:08 mark. Two quick goals by Buhr, the first at 11:15 from Merilees and Loftus, and the second, his hat- trick goal 24 seconds later from Merilees and Dave Schinde}, put the Flames out in front 6-4. But 14 seconds later the Steelers pulled to within a goal again be- fore Bartok closed out the scoring with the insurance marker from Gordon and Loewen. The Flames outshot the Steelers 52-28 with Gary Knight in goal for North Shore. Due to a tournament on Feb. 11 at the Winter Club, the Flames’ tegular Saturday night game has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 8:45, when they host the Hastings Express.
