The level of available blood in the Red Cross bload bank fell to only a two-day supply, Elective surgery was threatened across the province and a massive appeal went out through the media for blood donors. Fortunately, donors responded and the blood bank level was built up to the normal five day supply. The question remains, however: What caused the blood shortage? “The reason we suffered a shortage in January was simply that not cnough people donated blood in December,’’ said Red Cross representative Gabrielle Minot. ‘‘Blood can only be stored for five weeks. In other years we were able to squeak through by promoting our clinics just before the — holi- days. This year we went into the Christmas period with a shortfall and the pre-holiday clinics were not as well attended as they have been in the past. “We want to thank all those people who came out and gave blood during the shortage. You came through for Red Cross when we really needed it,’’ she said, nhoung many of the people who came forward had donated blood in the past, but had not given a donation in more than a year. “It's great to get these donors back on the list,” she said, ‘‘but | would like to remind people that if we are to avoid future shortages we need people to make blood ii meeds blood donations on a regular basis. The blood we collected in January will become outdated this month, If you weren't able to give blood then, please attend a clinic this month,.”” The following is a list of upcom- ing blood donor clinics on the North Shore: Thursday, Feb. 11 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Capilano Mail (west mall), 935 Marine Dr.: Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 15 and 16 from 2 to 8 p.m, at Lions Gate Hospital, Medical Day Centre, 200 E. 15th St. Create puppets CHILDREN, AGED six to 10, can create puppets from fabric, foam, fibre, wood, styrofosm, and cardboard at Esgle Hi bour Centre's course Perfo ing Puppets. — The course takes place Mon- = day, Feb. 1 to Monday, March F from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. tg For further information call, Centre is located ‘at. 5575’ Marine Dr. in West Vaucouver," See your Independen Insurance Agent toda NORTH VANCOUVER ALL-WEST INSURANCE SERVICES LTD. 1035 Marine Or. 987-9356 ARCHIBALD CLARK & DEFIEUX UTD. 1668 Lloyd Ave. 985.0581 ATWATER INSURANCE ‘AGENCIES LTD, Capilano Mail 988-5261 ” 928 W. 16th St. LYNN VALLEY INSURANCE AGENCY LTD. 3471 Mountain Hwy. 984.4515 MCPHERSON INSURANCE AGENCY LTD. 106 East 14th St. MITTEN INSURANCE AGENCIES LTD. 980-2655 MORTIMER INSURANCE SERVICES INC.
