JACK WATTS, the North Shore's “Mr. Heritage,’? was the recipient of the second annual award of merit presented by the North Van- couver Community Arts Council in recognition of his work on behalf of North Vancouver heritage. A longtime member of provin- cial and national heritage societies, Watts recognized the need for ac- tion on the North Shore, becoming in 1977 the founder of the ad hoc North Shore Heritage Advisory Committee, comprising repre- Sentatives of the three municipalities. Eventually the municipal coun- cils passed bylaws appointing three representatives from the three municipalities to meet regularly as a nine-member committee. In 1984, after seven years, the com- mittee submitted its report, which consolidated their joint heritage inventory, and was then disband- ed. . Since no further civic action was taken, Watts recommended to the North Vancouver Community Arts Council that a new heritage com- Mittee be formed. On Jan. 29 this year, Arts Council funds were allocated and the North Shore Heritage Com- mittee was formed, and has since met regularly to assist the three North Shore municipalities to take action on the recommendations of . the previous committee. ‘ In.1982 Watts was appointed to the board of directors of Heritage B.C. and this year he was elected Heritage B.C. president and repre- sented B.C. at the Heritage Canada conference in Quebec. - With a family history of ship- building, the North Shore resident founded the Nautical Heritage Society, which is now part of. the Vancouver Wooden Boat Society and the World Ship Society. Continuing in that direction, Watts was appointed in 1986 to the board of directors of the Van- couver Maritime Museum Society...
