THIS WEEK I’ve collected a random lot of travel tips
about everything from travelling dogs to terrorists, which
ought to interest almost everyone.

Some of the items couid ge-
nuinely qualify for the ‘Odd
Spot’? — that little corner of sume
newspapers where they collect
nonsense news. Others are fairly
serious.

Are you planning to take Fido
with you on your winter vacation
to some sun spot in the southern
U.S.? If so, be warned that heart-
worms are a real danger in parts of
the south, midwest and California.

These are triggered by mosquito
bites — the infected mosquito
transfers larvae to the dog which
eventually matures into a thread-
like worm.

age these worms can. do to your
dog’s vital organs, especially the
heart, kidneys, liver and lungs.
Untreated infected animals may
die,

There is a preventative drug,
diethylcarvamazin, that if started
30 days before your trip will pre-
vent the larvae from developing in-
to worms.

One of the problems with an in-
fected animal is that it shows no
symptoms of the disease until the
problem is acute. If you’ve had
your dog in an infected area it
might be a good idea for your vet
to give him a blood test. Unfortu-
nately, treatment isn’t very effec-
tive.

Luckily, humans are not in any
danger.

Americans seem to be a lot more

afraid than Canadians about ter- -

rorist attacks while. travelling
overseas. Especially this summer,
American travel agents were repor-
ting masses of cancellations.

As you might expect, someone
always capitalizes on someone
else’s fear. In this case, it’s a video
called Travel Without Terror, nar-
rated by Sabi Shabtai, who served
in the Israeli Foreign Service. It
sells for $39.95 U.S. and if you re-
ally want to see it, you might talk
one of your local video outfits into
ordering it for you.
