18 - Sunday, August 31, 1986 - North Shore News Fashion SETTING FASHION TRENDS Upholding 40 years of tradition THE SLOGAN, ‘Where fashion and quality make all the difference’ has never been more evident than now at Gold’s, ‘currently celebrating 40 years in the fashion business. The ever-changing world of fashion has Gold's merchandising director travelling to Europe, the Far East and New York to bring to Vancouver the fabrics and colors that make fashion as exciting as it is. Gold's has continued to move with world trends, allowing the B.C. homz2 sewer the opportunity to select fabrics that are in fashion around the world today and fomorrow. In 1982, Robert Morris bought Gold’s Fabrics when it was in danger of closing. A string of American owners had left one of Vancouver's best known businesses with little remaining but its reputa- tion. “And that’s why I bought it,”’ Morris says. ‘‘There was little left but the name and the employees, but those employees didn't believe Gold's was going to close and I’m proud to say that now, we've still got about 82 per cent of those people. I'm still impressed by them.” ATTITUDE COUNTS It's that attitude that makes employees feel like owners, says Gold’s operations and merchandis- ing manager Charles Kosmadia. Kosmadia, a Fijian who im- migrated to Canada when he was 15, was part of the deal when Morris bought Gold’s.. A Gold’s employee since 1967, ‘“‘there was no deal without Charles,”’ Morris says. ‘He does everything." Kosmadia has spent virtually all his life in fabrics, picking up the trade as a young boy, he travelled to the world’s fabric centres with his father and by the age of 15 was supervising 150 staff people. Now he travels to New York, Europe and the Far East to select and buy the world’s most exciting new fabrics for Vancouver’s home sewers. As Gold’s celebrates its 40th an- niversary, Morris says the com- pany is looking ahead with new ideas to help its customers. Home sewing has undergone drastic changes since Gold's open- ed. its first store on Granville Street. Today’s home sewer is more likely to be a working woman who has a keen eye for design and who sews because she is able to turn out a professionally finished garment at dramatic sav- ings. PRODUCTS BACKED But today’s woman sews because she enjoys it too, Morris says. “Sewing is to her what tennis and squash are to me,’’ he says. “And I think that in B.C., sewing your own clothes is the ‘in’ thing to do. I think there’s more interest in sewing in B.C. than there is other areas."’ . Kosmadia says when he sets out on a buying trip, he consults first with store managers, who know what their customers want. “That's the secret to our buying,” he says. And all products are backed up by the company. “We stand behind everything we buy and everything we sell.’’ Morris said. “If you get it home, and it’s just not right, bring it back.” Every Gold’s sales clerk is an accomplished sewer who must make six, professionally finished model garments a year. Those garments are displayed in each store. ‘‘When you ask one of our clerks to help, you get a competent answer,'’ Morris says proudly. As for what's happening in fabrics, Kosmadia proudly displays a wide array of colorful rayons and synthetics featuring what he calls a native beat: figurative and abstract motifs in jewel toned prints. Jade, fuschia, magenta, royal are very big this fall and Kosmadia says they'll be big next spring as well. In keeping with Expo and its potpourri of people from all over the world, Gold's is stocking fabrics like wool knits, jersey rib, rayon, woo! crepe, wool flannel, gabardine, mosaic wool, silks and velvets and has a collection of metallics for holiday sewing as well, COMPLETE LINES And the biggest item this fall, Kosmadia says, is the sweater knit which will be translated into sum- mer weight materials for warmer season wear. Morris says the sewing notions carried by Gold's is the most com- plete line anywhere in Vancouver. ve “OH (dratyll”?
