43 - Wednesday, February 12, 198 sh Shore News Pupils tune up French skills NORTH SHORE’S first graduating classes in the French immersion program are planning a trip to Quebec to fine tune their second language skills. Two grade seven classes, com- posed of 54 students from Cleve- land and Ross Road Elementary Schools, will visit Ste. Foie, a small town outside of Quebec City, April 6-18. The group is currently raising funds to help finance the trip. Elizabeth McPherson, from the Cleveland school parents commit- tee, said the trip will be repeated for future graduating classes in the “French immersion program. DAILY FRENCH “The purpose of the trip is to give students an opportunity to use their French on a day-to-day basis. It needs to be spoken with Fren- ch-Canadian people,” she said. McPherson’s 12-year-old daugh- ter Jean was one of the first stu- dents at Cleveland Elementary to enrol in the program, which started at the Kindergarten level. McPherson said the trip is an excellent opportunity for her daughter to practise her French because neither she nor her hus- band are fluent in a second language. “We were born and raised in North Vancouver,’?. McPherson said. “IT would like to speak French, but I only took some classes in high school. Jean is very fluent. Our children were the guinea pigs for the program, so we were taking a chance, but it worked out beautifully.’* POPULAR PROGRAM McPherson said the program has increased in popularity on the North Shore. When Jean was enrolled in Cleveland’s program there were 20 students. This year there are 300 French immersion students at the same school. A second aspect of the upcom- ing trip will involve students from Quebec coming to the North Shore to stay with the families of French immersion children. The tentative date for their trip is May 2-11, To help finance the student ex- change, the North Shore students will be holding a fashion show March 4 at Cleveland Elementary School. Tickets are $10 and include wine, appetizers and the chance to win a door prize.
