Funeral services are set for today (Friday, June 21) at Upper Lonsdale United Church at 3 p.m. A report from the cor- oner’s office Thursday said Williams died of cardio- respiratory arrest due to electrocution. The coroner’s office reported the investigation in- to the fireman’s death is continuing and no decision on an inquest will be made until coroner Gerald Tilley has met with representatives from B.C. Hydro and the Workers’ Compensation Board. A decision on whether to hold an inquest will be made prior to June 28, Tilley’s of- fice said. First reports said a hang glider or light plane had gone down in the area. But according to a fire department preliminary report, a scrub tree came in contact with a Hydro wire, grounding the current along the tree. The Hydro wires are a major transmission line into Vancouver. Williams apparantly walked into the area and came into contact with the electric current. A second firefighter was treated- in Lions Gate Hospital and released. Paul Degraaf was told to take it easy after receiving a residual amount of electrici- ty. The 55-year-old Williams was a pumper captain and had spent his entire career with the district fire depart- ment. A Lynn Valley resi- dent, he is survived by his wife Shirley, three sons and two daughters. “We all enjoyed his com- pany,’ said Deputy Fire Chief Ed Hudson. He described Williams as a well-respected man and a pleasant person to work with.
