But the tax bill will be lower for strata and apartment building owners and businesses that use containers instead of cans for garbage. Unul now these people were paying for garbage both through their property taxes and directly to a private garbage collection company, because North Vancouver City does not provide a container service. Council also gave final approval Monday toa bylaw total, to contract out its garbage collection service to Smithrite Disposal Ltd. Smithrite will not pick up garbage from containers as part of that service, though it does also operate a separate container Service. City taxpayers won't know how much their tax bills will decrease or increase until they get their tax bills in June. All taxpayers will see a drop in their general tax portion of the bill. But those getting their garbage picked up through the City will have about $49 added onto the tax Alderman Frank Marcino said. The garbage cost will be separately listed on the tax bill. Marcino was the only council member to vote against the user-pay system for garbage. He wondered what the result would be if it was applied to other government services. Should pensioners pay school taxes when they don't have children” attending school? Should non-drivers have to pay for road maintenance? Marcino asked.
